He became interested in specializing in weight reduction in 1974 because he realized that many of the illnesses that he was treating such as diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, and arthritis were either caused by or worsened by being overweight. He joined the American Society of Bariatric Physicians (ASBP), an organization of physicians dedicated to the ethical treatment of obesity and eating disorders, in 1977. Dr. Beale’s practice in Washington, D.C. is the largest and most successful weight reduction practice in the world run exclusively by African-Americans. He has treated over 25,000 patients, the overwhelming majority of which are Black Women. Sadly Dr. Beale was killed in an automobile accident on November 13, 2004. As Dr. Beale's daughter, she "grew up" with the practice and worked in the office in many capacities as a youth and young adult. She was glad to return to the practice and to the service of humanity, as she was not being fulfilled spiritually working primarily with machines. She holds the titles of Director of Operations and Weight Reduction Counselor for Robert S. Beale, Jr., M.D. She is an Affiliate Member of the American Society of Bariatric Physicians (ASBP). She has received and continues to receive organized training in weight reduction counseling. |
